Maximum number of participants: 20

Information:
The workshop is specially designed for cultural workers with and without caring responsibilities who are either employed by an institution or work freelance. Free childcare will be provided for the duration of the workshop, which is expected to take place in the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum by art mediator Mira Parthasarathy (please state the name and age of the child/children when registering). The workshop includes a joint lunch break of approx. 45 minutes; a free hot meal will be provided. The maximum number of participants is 20.

Description:
How can we as cultural practitioners think structurally about people with caring responsibilities in our work? How can we harmonise the often avant-garde public themes of our institutions with internal structures? What power do we as cultural practitioners have to transform the arts?

The aim of the workshop is to sensitise participants to the inequalities and mechanisms of exclusion surrounding care and gender in the art field, to shed light on them from a feminist perspective and to provide them with tools that they can transfer to their own contexts. Sascia Bailer will present curatorial methods and strategies from her own practice and research. In discussion rounds and hands-on group work, the participants will explore their agency in their respective contexts and identify the first steps they can take to make their working environment fairer and more caring through micro-political action. The aim is not only to offer more support for audience groups with caring responsibilities, but also to look at what is needed so that contributing artists, freelance collaborators and employees with children/family members with caring needs can continue to be part of the art field.

Sascia Bailer is a researcher, writer and curator working at the intersection of care, contemporary art and social transformation. Her doctoral thesis "Caring Infrastructures. Transforming the Arts Through Feminist Care Ethics" was conducted at the Zurich University of the Arts and the University of Reading. As a freelance curator, she organises exhibitions (including „Mothers*, Warriors, and Poets: Care as Resistance“, StadtPalais Stuttgart) and gives lectures and workshops (including Goethe Institut, Documenta Fifteen, nGbk, LabK, INSTAR Cuba). She is the author of "Curating, Care, and Corona" (Arthur Boskamp Verlag, 2020) and of "Care for Caregivers" in the anthology "Curating with Care" (Routledge, 2023). She is co-editor of "Letters to Joan" (2020, HKW) and the artist books "Re-Assembling Motherhood(s): On Radical Care and Collective Art as Feminist Practices" by Maternal Fantasies (Onomatopee, 2021), and "What We Could Have Become: On Queer Feminist Filmmaking" by Malu Blume (Onomatopee, 2021). Sascia Bailer has worked internationally in the arts, including at MoMA PS1, Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the Vera List Centre for Art and Politics. In 2019/20 she was Artistic Director of the Arthur Boskamp Foundation in Northern Germany. She completed her MA from Parsons School of Design and her BA from Zeppelin University.
