Lucy R. Lippard begins her anthology of conceptual art "Six Years: The dematerialization of the art object from 1966 to 1972" with the work "Cahnce Imagery" by George Brecht from 1966. Brecht, however, who spent his later years in Cologne, writes in this small booklet on the notion of chance. The ‘dematerialization’ that Lippard recognizes in Brecht’s text and in the following collected contributions is a radical change in the meaning of material and the notion of the artwork of her time. Today, exactly fifty years later, concepts of ‘new materialism’ and ‘material turn’ circulate and increasingly become a part of a mutual theory formation and artistic vocabulary, stressing the relational framework of the material. On the occasion of the anniversary year, Temporary Gallery let chance and the material debate rule for one month. It offers itself as a platform and archive for artistic works, comments, and thoughts by a future generation of artists who would like to react to the impact of the current theoretical debate and its influence on art. The contributions are determined by the size Brecht’s artist book.
